INERIS, the French government's health and safety research institute,
recently completed a two-year project that measured the level of
potentially harmful emissions from cathode-ray video-display terminals,
such as computer monitors.
The institute conducted the study to see if large offices and
electronic retailers with many screens switched on for display
purposes increase risk of exposure for employees and customers.
The study used l8 new and old devices, including computer monitors,
video monitors, televisions and Minitel terminals. Researchers
measured five different types of emissions including ionizing
radiation; ultra-low frequency waves; and ultraviolet, magnetic
and electrical fields, at 50 cm from the screen face. The authors
conclude that emission levels from this collection of equipment
still fall well below French exposure standards.
"The study has confirmed on a national level the results of
international studies with an important additional element -
that simulta- neously operating units do not sig- nificantly
increase emission risks," says Jean-ClauJe Cnockaert of INERIS.
However, research has not yet determined the health effects of
emissions from video-display terminals on users. The European Union's
screen-based equipment directive calls for invisible electromagnetic
radiation to be reduced to "negligible levels" to protect workers'
health and safety.
