The U.S. territory of Guam may be remote, but it's not so far away
that OSHA can't keep tabs on employers who violate safety standards.
The agency recently cited two Guam contractors for violations related
      to various hazardous conditions.

The case against the first contractor involved employees at a school
construction site in Inarajan. The agency says the employees used a
steel-cutting machine without a guard around the blade, worked around
an unsafe crane and were not protected from falling from the edges
of elevated work surfaces. These alleged offenses constituted one
      serious and two willful violations.

The second contractor, who was building an apartment complex in
Machanao, also allowed a variety of unsafe conditions to exist,
OSHA says. The firm was cited for alleged serious violations for
lack of coverings and guardrails to prevent workers from falling
through openings in floors and lack of safety measures to prevent
electrical shock injuries. The alleged willful violations involved
the lack of fall protection on scaffolds and along the edges of
      raised work surfaces.

Each contractor received citarions of more than $l00,000.
This is not the first time either firm has run into trouble with
OSHA - the agency has cited both firms in the past for failure
to provide fall protection at construction sites.
