KOSHA-KOWEPO signed MOU

November 9, 2011

A joint effort has begun to protect the safety of workers in power plants.

On November 9, Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA; President: Baek, Hun-Ki) signed an MOU with Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO; President & CEO Kim, Moon-Duk). The signing ceremony took place in the grand hall of Taean Thermal Power Complex Division of KOWEPO and the two signing parties promised to work together for the prevention of accidents.

- Date: 10:30-13:30, November 9, 2011 (Wed)

- Venue: Taean Thermal Power Complex Division, KOWEPO, in Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do

- Attended by: President Baek, Hun-Ki (KOSHA); President & CEO Kim, Moon-Duk (KOWEPO)

KOWEPO operates four thermal power complexes in the western part of Korea including Taean Thermal Power Complex Division, which is a standard thermal power plant in Korea with the capacity of 4,000 MW. In addition to some 1,800 employees in KOWEPO, more than 5,000 workers from 10 partner companies are working together.

The MOU is aimed at establishing Safety and Health Management System (KOSHA 18001) and preventing occupational injuries in KOWEPO and in its partner companies.

Based on the MOU, KOWEPO will work to prevent occupational injuries among workers in its four subsidiary power plants. In addition, they will establish a coherent safety and health management system supported by KOSHA, which will be reflected on their operations.

The prevention activities that KOWEPO and KOSHA will carry out jointly are: joint inspection and accident prevention of injuries such as electrocutions; assisting the establishment of safety and health management system in KOWEPO partner companies; and the provision of safety information toward related and partner companies.

The areas where KOSHA will provide assistance are: training and the publication of manuals for safety and health management system; risk assessment for the early identification of workplace hazards and risks; and safety training and campaigns.

Together with the MOU signing, the workers and employers held an event to commit themselves to “zero-accident and zero-breakdown at work”, and renewed their commitments to solve safety and health issues.

“Through the MOU, the mother company and its subsidiaries will jointly launch safety and health activities. I believe such activities will result in positive outcomes by maximizing the effects of accident prevention. Furthermore, securing the safety in power plants will help to promote the level of public service as well,” said an official from KOSHA.
