A fire aboard a ship is a terrifying prospect. And now a special
negotiated rulemaking committee will study fire protection
for shipyard workers.
Right now general-industry fire-protection standards cover
the shipyard industry. But as with other maritime hazards,
the risks are often different from those in land-based industries.
The newly established Fire Protection in Shipyard Employment
Negotiated Rulemaking Advisory Committee will help OSHA draft
a specific standard for the shipyard industry.
The new panel will conduct the negotiated rulemaking
as a separate process from the ongoing work of the existing
Maritime Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health.
