  Keep Your Drivers Safe
  ======================

In a July 1998 Alert, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health reports that from 1980 through 1992, motor vehicle crashes were the
leading cause of work-related deaths among U.S. workers, accounting for
more than three work force deaths each day. Of the fatally injured,
93 percent were male; 62 percent were not using any type of safety
restraint at the time of the accident.

NIOSH recommends that employers take appropriate steps to reduce traffic-
related deaths and injuries in the workplace. NIOSH suggests that companies
should:

    - Conduct driver's license background checks on prospective drivers
      before they are hired.
    - Establish a written policy that requires drivers and passengers to
wear seat belts at all times.
    - Ensure that adequate seat belts are installed in workplace vehicles
to accommodate the driver and all passengers.
    - Ensure that drivers comply with designated speed limits.
    - Establish schedules that allow drivers to obey speed limits. Companies
should also limit drivers' work hours according to regulations and
never allow a fatigued driver to operate a vehicle.
    - Train drivers in safe driving practices and proper use of vehicle
      safety features.
    - Establish written procedures to ensure proper maintenance of all
      vehicle systems.
