     Guard Against Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
     ========================================

In its February 1998 newsletter Energizer, Peoples Gas Co., Chicago, warned
that a buildup of carbon monoxide in the house can have deadly results.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is especially dangerous because the chemical
cannot be seen or smelled. Here are some steps you can take to help ensure
that your family does not fall victim to carbon monoxide poisoning:

   - Have your heating system inspected by a professional contractor every
year, ideally before the heating is turned on. An improperly tuned
     furnace can cause problems.
   - Check chimneys, flue pipes and vents for rust, cracks or blockages.
Even something as innocuous as a bird's nest could block up a chimney
and prevent carbon monoxide from escaping into the outside air.
   - Make sure that gas-appliance burner flames are blue (not yellow) and
     are properly adjusted and ventilated.
   - Install an Underwriters Laboratories-approved carbon monoxide detector
     in the house.
   - Know the flu-like symptoms associated with carbon monoxide poisoning,
such as dizziness, headaches and nausea.

If you suspect a carbon monoxide problem, says Peoples Gas, lower the
thermostat, open windows and doors and vacate the premises. Go to a
neighbor's house, and call the fire department and your local gas company.
