      Don't Drink Yourself Dry
      =========================

 The June 6, 1998, New York Times says Americans are, paradoxically, drinking
themselves dry. According to a 3,000-person study conducted by the
International Bottled Water Association and Nutrition Information Center, most
of us drink an average of eight cups of water and other hydrating beverages
daily. But we counteract the good effects of those liquids when we drink about
five servings of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, which increase urination
and dehydrate the body.

 If a person does not consume enough water, he or she will feel the effects.
For example, individuals who drink three or fewer glasses of water a day are
likely to be groggy when they wake up and have dry skin. An adequate intake of
water, on the other hand, produces many benefits, including regular digestion
and fewer headaches. Nutrition experts recommend the equivalent of eight
glasses of water a day (acceptable substitutes include milk, juice and
caffeine-free carbonated drinks). The experts also recommend an additional
glass of water to offset the dehydrating effects of a cup of coffee or an
alcoholic drink.
