                  Can Smoking Hurt Your Ears?
                 =============================

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, in Madison, Wis.,
say "Yes," smoking may harm your ability to hear.

For five years, the Wisconsin scientists studied 3,753 people between the ages
of 48 and 92. The group included nonsmokers, people who had formerly smoked,
and some who still smoked. Results of the study, published in the June 3,
1998, Journal of the American Medical Association, revealed that smokers were
nearly 1.7 times more likely to suffer hearing loss than were nonsmokers.

In addition, a smoker's chances of hearing loss increased in relation to the
amount he or she smoked. For instance, someone who smoked a pack a day for 40
years was found to be 1.3 times more likely to experience hearing loss than a
person who smoked a pack a day for 10 years.

But there's good news, too. Based on the study results, the researchers now
believe that age-related hearing loss may not be inevitable -- it may be
prevented if a person gives up smoking.
