1998 National Farm Safety and Health Week
    ==========================================

"Precision Farming Includes Safety and Health"

                            Dear Friend
                        Directory of Materials

                            Dear Friend:

                          Welcome to the
1998 Farm Safety and Health Week Web Page!

"Precision Farming Includes Safety and Health" is the theme of
the 1998 National Farm Safety and Health Week -- our 55th year focusing
on safety and health on the farm. From September 20 - 26th, and the rest
of the year for that matter, we will be working together to remind farmers
and ranchers that to be proactive in the area of precision farming, safety
and health must be included as a management decision.

Safety and health in precision farming simply refers to providing farmers
and ranchers with more information about their operations that they can
use to gain more control over their farm or ranch profitability. This
information can include such things as injuries, illnesses, close calls,
hazards, importance of safety devices, safe work practices, personal
protective equipment and more. This information will allow farmers to
identify problem areas that affect their profitability.

Although the theme of this year's observance focuses on the economic
toll resulting from unintentional injuries and deaths on the farm,
we remember a far more tragic side that affects farmers, ranchers and
their families every day of the year. Over seven hundred lives were lost
and over a hundred fifty thousand people were severely injured in
farm-related activities last year alone. Safety and health education
plays a vital role in reducing fatalities and injuries on the farm.

On behalf of the members and staff of the National Safety Council, I wish
you much success in your 1998 National Farm Safety & Health Week program
activities and thank you for your commitment to safety and health in
agriculture. Your educational efforts make a difference and affect the
lives of many people ... often of families unaware that tragedy is only
    a moment away.

    Sincerely,
    Jerry Scannell
    President, National Safety Council
