Five Seetors Must Report Environmental Data
--------------------------------------------
Five industry sectors are now required to report extensive data on
their envrronmental performance to the Environmental Protection
Agency under a new community right-to-know pilot protect, accord-
ing to EPA.The sectors are automobile assembly, iron and steel, petro-
leum refining, primary nonferrous metals and pulp mills.
The Sector Facility lndexing Project is part of an effert to make it
easier to compile information about facilities in these industry sectors. It
will allow the public to obtain and compare site-specific environmen-
tal information within a given industry, EPA says. The agency is
scheduled to report on the initial stage of this project before the end of
the year.
Each facility in the project is required to report on production or
capacity; Toxic Release lnventory releases; TRI releases weighted by
toxicity frators; production capacity-to-pollution ratios; inspection,
compliance, and enforcement history under the Clean Air Act, Clean
Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; and demo-
graphic information.
Some members of industries affected by the project say the data
requirements may confuse people and are hard to explain. "The con-
cern we have is that the data that is in there, if it is not accurate and
properly characterized, can mislead and misinform the public,' says
Josephine Cooper. vice president for regulatory affairs at the American
Forest and Paper Association.
