Fox River Cleanup to Accelerate
=================================
The cleanup of Wisconsin's lower Fox River and Green Bay environment
will accelerate, thanks to an agreement involving several state
and federal environmental agencies and two Wisconsin American in-
dian tribes. The agreement, signe in mid-July, will enable the agen-
cies and tribes to merge their re sources and develop a clean-up plan by
Feb. 1, 1998.
The organizatirons involvoded are the Environmental. Protection Agency,
the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic anJ Atmospheric Administration
the Menominee India
Tribe of Wisconsin and the Oneida Indians of Wisconsin.
From l957 to l971, several paper mills along the Fox River released about
250,000pounds of toxic PCBs into the river. Those PCBs and other hazardous
substances have become trapped in the river's sediment, posing a risk to
humans and wildlife.
The new agreement is consistent with and agreement announced in January
involving parties potentially responsible for the contaminted sediment
found in the lower Fox River, including P.H.Glatfelter Co., Riverside
Paper Corp., NCR Corp., Appleton Papers Inc., Fort Howard Corp.,
U.S.Paper Mills Corp. and Wisconsin Tissue Mills inc.
The Fox River Group, a coalition of these current and former paper
companies, said the companies "long ago committed to participate in
achieving a reasonable, constructive approach to the river. The companies
made a $10 million financial commitment to the stateled effort earlier this
year. We are prepared to work with all parties to achieve a responsibel,
balanced approach to the river's ecosystem.
